Oxycodone vs Oxycontin Comparison

In the world of pain controlling medication, a person will have lots of options in terms of relieve pain associated with a medical condition or an injury. One of the most powerful pain medication is Oxycodone and Oxycotin. Often these two are confused for being the same, but the reality is that when you look at Oxycodone vs Oxycontin, you will find some tremendous differences.

The first difference in Oxycodone vs Oxycontin is that Oxycontine is actually a name of a pain management drug while Oxycodone is a compound in many pain management drugs. The connection here is that the compound Oxycodone is the only pain management compound in Oxycontin. What you are getting with Oxycontin is pure Oxycodone. Other pain killers that use Oxycodone will use this compound in concert with other compounds as well.

The real difference in medications that use a mixture of other compounds along with Oxycodone and Oxycontin with uses only pure Oxycodone is the issue of time release. This is a beneficial aspect for several different reasons.

The first benefit is that pain management drugs that use Oxycodone tend to work very well but they are short lived. Typically they last around 4 to maybe 6 hours at best. After that, you will need to take more.

With Oxycontin, the drug is time released so even though the dosage can be high, only a little of the Oxycodone is released into the blood stream at one time. What this means is that Oxycontin will last at least 12 hours which means you will be taking less medication.

Another issue with Oxycontin and it’s time release is in the matter of addiction. These pain killers that contain Oxycodone can be very effective because they are very powerful but they can also be very addictive as well. When you have to take pain medication every 4 hours, you can very easily become addicted. When you take 2 pills a day at maximum and with the slower time release of Oxycontin, you minimize the risk of becoming addicted.

The reality is that when you look at Oxycodone vs Oxycontin, there are similarities, but to think that they are the same is wrong. The fact is that one is a brand name and the other is an actual drug compound. Which puts the comparisons of Oxycodone vs Oxycontin in a little better perspective.
